The Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce Agriculture and Fisheries - Hon. JC Hutchinson, CEO of RADA - Mr. Peter Thompson, RADA National Board member - Mr. Tony Scott and representatives from RADA, St. Mary Parish Office toured the parish on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. The St. Mary Agro Tour came out of several discussions with Mr. Peter Thompson, Mr. Tony Scott and Minister Hutchinson regarding the development of agriculture in the parish. They visited large sized farms such as Vijay Smith's to highlight the use/relevance of technology in agricultural production as well as the need for access to government lands in order to satisfy demand for arable land to increase economic sustainability.
Minister Hutchinson touring the Banana Chips Factory in Nutfield, St. Mary
Cognizant of his passion for promoting the value chain in agricultural production, Minister Hutchinson visited the banana chips factory in Nutfield, the packaging facility in Dover and the Conch plant in Richmond. An integral part of the Minister's visit was to investigate the state of farm roads throughout the parish as well as seeking to identify government lands being administered by the National Land Agency.
Richmond Adult Correctional Facility
The final stop was at the Richmond Farm Adult Correctional Facility where Minister Hutchinson toured the facility to view progress of several Agricultural Projects being undertaken as a result of veritable partnerships established at the parish level as well as national level. Minister Hutchinson reiterated that a committee was formed to spearhead a MOU whereby agricultural initiatives are to be pursued to assist the Department of Corrections in their bid for self- sufficiency as well as to positively engage inmates in productive tasks.
