The mango is one of the world's most valued fruit. It is a major crop in some tropical and sub-tropical countries. It is found consistently within the markets of North America, Europe and Asia .
The mango is highly versatile in its use. Chutneys, pickles and other green mango products require suitable cultivars whose textures, flavour and fibre content lends them to be used at the mature green stage.
Once peeled the mango flesh does not cause allergic reactions in most people and can be eaten without worry. Fruits imported into the United States have been subjected to hot water treatment to rid them of

Mango is commonly grown in St. Thomas , St. Catherine, St. Elizabeth, Trelawny, St. Mary, St. James , Hanover , St. Andrew and Westmoreland.
The crop is rarely grown in orchards (pure stand) in Jamaica but is grown wildly in the most parishes. This has led to some difficulty in the maintenance of quality standards in the pre-harvest and post-harvest care of the fruit.
The initial layout of the crop orchard is expensive but must be seen as an investment as once the trees are grown, they will continue to provide good yield for several years with the appropriate cultural practices in place.
The cost to establish one (1) hectare and maintain the crop to first economic bearing at five (5) years is $357,000. The average yield at that time is approximately 8,000 kg. but this varies with the variety of mango grown. The cost of production is$ 45.00 per kg. The tree achieve full (peak) bearing at seven (7) years.
Mangoes are needed for the fresh local and export markets and to a lesser
extent, the processing market.
Improved varieties in demand for the fresh fruit market are - Tommy Atkens, Hayden, Keitt, St. Julian, East Indian, and Graham. Other varieties are Robin and Black mango.
Varieties needed by the processing industry are - common, number eleven. Mango. Present buyers are Canco ( St. Thomas ), West Best and Southern Fruits & Food Processing Ltd. (St. Elizabeth) and Grace (Canning) Processing Industries.
The fresh mature fruit is exported to United Kingdom , Canada and Cayman. Fruits are not exported to USA because of Sanitary and Phytosanitary restrictions imposed on the product.
Approximately 400 tonnes are exported yearly as shown in the table below.

This varies based on varieties and the type of market the product enters:
Processing - 6 - 12.00 / lb
Fresh food (local) trade - 30 - 150.00 / doz. (based on varieties)
Export market - 120.00 - 200.00 / doz. (based on varieties)
However it should be remembered that the quality and quantity (volume) purchased also varies and can compensate to provide adequate returns.
Recommended Varieties for the export market
The varieties mentioned for the fresh fruit market are characterised as large and of a bland flavour preferred by the European market (Tommy Atkens, Keitt & Graham). However the Julie and East Indian varieties are highly
favoured by the West Indian emigrants from the Caribbean .
Requirements for the export market:
The fruits must be clean of all pesticide residue, free from cuts and bruises, mature and the degree of ripeness is dependent on the distant to the market and the method of transportation. Generally mature turned mangoes are air-freighted to the overseas markets.
