PRAEDIAL LARCENY PREVENTION PROGRAMME

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On Thursday, May 20, 2010, the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries launched the Praedial Larceny Prevention Programme at the Hilton Hotel in New Kingston. The programme seeks to strengthen the fight against Praedial Larceny through five areas:

 

  1. The appointment of a Praedial Larceny Prevention Coordinator
  2. A Public Awareness Campaign
  3. The Re-education of the police force and judiciary
  4. The strengthening of existing laws
  5. The establishment of a traceability system


Among other related objectives, the charge of the Praedial Larceny Prevention Programme Coordinator (PLPC) is to see to the strategic planning of sting operations that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators of Praedial Larceny.

The PLPC reports to a Praedial Larceny Monitoring Committee which comprises high level representatives from the offices of the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries; the Ministry of National Security; the Attorney General; the Ministry of Health; RADA; the Jamaica Agricultural Society; Crime Stop; the Jamaica Defense Force; the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Island Special Constabulary Force.


The Monitoring Committee, to which the Praedial Larceny Prevention Coordinator reports, has established two committees:

  1. A Legislation & Enforcement Sub-committee to look at reviewing and making recommendations regarding Jamaican law as it relates to Praedial Larceny
  2. A Traceability Sub-committee to identify a method of tracing agricultural produce from the farm to the table-fork.

    We Are All At Risk programme series.
